Data Visualisation Tools

Explore and present your data with interactive visualisations

Kinabase's Data Visualisation Tool

s help you explore, analyse, and present your Collection data in ways a standard table can't. Each one opens as a side pane from the collection's toolbar, and is configured per collection by an admin.

1. Available tools

Mind Map

Visualise record relationships as an interactive mind map. Great for exploring connections and hierarchies in your data.

Bubble Chart

Visualise records as interactive bubbles, grouped and sized by your chosen fields. Great for spotting patterns and comparing data across categories.

Map

Plot records with location data on an interactive world map. Ideal for understanding the geographic distribution of your data.

Record Roulette

Randomly select records with a fun spin animation. Useful for fair selection, gamification, or simply adding some fun to your workflow.

Word Cloud

Display text data and categories as a visual cloud where word size shows frequency. Perfect for identifying common themes and patterns.

Leaderboard

Rank colleagues by a selected numeric field from your records, and display the top three on a podium. Useful for tracking performance, rankings, or priority.

2. Enabling tools

You'll need Configure permission for a collection to turn tools on or off. If you're unsure, ask your System admin.

Mind Map, Bubble Chart, and Map are turned on by default, but only appear once a collection has the field types they need. Record Roulette, Word Cloud, and Leaderboard are turned off by default and need enabling even if the field requirements are met.

1. Open Collection Configuration

Select the collection, click the options menu (⋯), and select Configure.

2. Select Tools

Under Display, select Tools.

3. Turn on the tools you need

In the Data Visualisation Tools pane, turn on each tool you want to make available. Click the cog icon next to a tool to configure its settings.

If a tool shows as Unavailable, your collection doesn't meet its field requirements - hover over it to see why.

3. Using tools

Once enabled, tools appear as icons in the collection's toolbar.

1. Open a collection

Select the collection from the sidebar.

2. Click a tool icon

Click a tool's icon in the toolbar to open it in the side pane.

3. Interact with the visualisation

Each tool has its own controls. Click a record within the visualisation to view its details, and use the Back button to return to the collection list.

4. Availability by collection

Not every tool is available for every collection - it depends on the field types the collection has:

ToolRequirementDefault
Mind MapAt least one self-referencing Linked Collection FieldOn
Bubble ChartCategorical fields (Stage, Select, Yes / No, Linked Collection) or numeric fieldsOn
MapAt least one Address fieldOn
Record RouletteAlways availableOff
Word CloudText, Select, Multi-Select, Linked Collection, or Lookup-to-text fieldsOff
LeaderboardA colleague field and at least one numeric fieldOff

If a tool is unavailable for your collection, it shows as Unavailable in the Data Visualisation Tools pane, with an explanation of what's required.

5. Best practices

  • Enable only what you need - keep the toolbar uncluttered by turning on only the tools your team will actually use.
  • Match the tool to your data - Map for locations, Word Cloud for text, Bubble Chart for categories and numbers.
  • Configure the settings - take a moment to set each tool's defaults for the best result with your data.

Read our Reporting and Creating charts guides for more ways to visualise your data.
