Connect SQL Data Sources
Connect Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL databases to Kinabase
Data Sources
Kinabase encrypts saved connection details and checks encrypted connections and certificates. Use a read-only database account so the connection has only the access it needs.
1. What you can do with data sources
Connect Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL databases from a single Data Sources area in Settings.
Kinabase encrypts saved connection details and checks the security of the connection.
Use the built-in connection test to confirm a source is reachable before you save it.
Each connection shows a clear status badge, so you always know whether it is active.
2. Before you start
You'll need to sign in as a System admin. Ask your database administrator for a connection string that uses a read-only database account and an encrypted connection.
Data sources are enabled per organisation. If you can't see Data Sources under Settings → Integrations, contact our support team to enable it for your organisation.
3. Connect a data source
1. Open the Data Sources area
- Click on your name in the bottom-left corner of Kinabase and select Settings.
- Open the Integrations section.
- Select Data Sources.
Here you'll see any data sources that are already connected, along with their provider and current status.
2. Add a data source
- Select Add data source.
- Select your provider - Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL.
- Enter a Display name to help you recognise the connection later, such as "Reporting warehouse".
- Paste your Connection string. It should identify the database, use a read-only account and require an encrypted connection. If the database is available over the public internet, its security certificate must match the address in the connection string. Ask your database administrator if you're unsure.
Connection details are encrypted and only used to read data.
3. Test the connection
Before saving, select Test connection to check that the database is reachable with the details you've entered. Kinabase tells you whether the connection test passed, or shows an error if it couldn't connect.
Once you're happy, save the data source. New connections appear in the Data Sources list straight away.
4. Connection status
Each data source shows a status badge so you can see its state at a glance:
The data source is active and reachable.
The last connection attempt failed. Open the data source to see the error and check the connection details.
The data source has been switched off and is not currently in use.
The saved connection string has been removed. Reconnect the source to use it again, or delete it.
5. Edit, disconnect or delete a data source
You stay in full control of every connection:
- Edit a data source to change its display name or update its connection string.
- Disconnect a data source to stop Kinabase using it. The saved connection string is removed, and the source moves to a Disconnected status until you reconnect it.
- Delete a data source to remove it from the list entirely. You need to disconnect a source first before you can delete it.
Connecting a SQL database lets your team work with its information in Kinabase while your System admins retain control of the connection.
